Kintsugi is the Japanese art of traditional repairing broken pottery with lacquer mixed with gold, silver, etc. Cracks, chips, and breakage are mended with lacquer and decorated with powdered gold, silver, etc.

There are professional kintsugi workers in Japan. Books on kintsugi are published and a kit for kintsugi is sold too. A workshop on kintsugi for members of the public is occasionally held.

The teacups, dish and rice bowl in the photos below were repaired by kintsugi in workshops of kintsugi “Urushigoto” which were held in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka in November and December 2019.
