History of Sakura tea
After the Meiji Restoration, the former retainers of Sakura Domain lost their jobs. Mr. Kuranami Toru, the former senior retainer of Sakura Domain, established “Sakura Dokyosha (佐倉同協社)” in 1871 to create jobs for the former retainers. Sakura Dokyosha started to cultivate and produce tea. The first tea plucking was conducted in 1875, and tea was exported to America in 1876.
Tea cultivation near Inba Lake
Moisture and fog are often generated around Inba Lake, the largest lake in Chiba Prefecture, making, the area suitable for tea cultivation. During the Edo Period, tea was cultivated in Sakura Domain. Tea plants were planted for protection against wind and sand.
Yachimata tea
Now Yachimata tea is cultivated and produced in Yachimata City. Fukazawa seichaen’s sencha “Yachimata kaori” has full body and rich flavor with moderate bitterness.
